According to China's customs data, from January to October, the export of silk clothing showed a mixed trend, with a decline in volume but an increase in average unit prices. A total of 65.79 million sets of silk garments were exported during this period, representing a year-on-year decrease of 10.1%. The total value reached $918 million, down 5% compared to the same period last year. However, the average unit price rose to $13.96 per set, up 5.67% year-on-year.
Silk clothing exports accounted for 69.7% of total silk product exports, 35.42% of real silk merchandise exports, and 0.87% of China’s overall garment exports. This highlights the sector’s importance within the broader textile industry.
**Major Markets Show Declines**
Exports to key markets saw a broad decline. Hong Kong had the smallest drop at 3.89%, while the UK experienced the largest fall at 17.82%. Other major markets included the United States, Hong Kong, Japan, Italy, and the UK.
The **United States** remained the largest market for Chinese silk garments. From January to October, 28.56 million sets were exported, valued at $385 million—a 10.56% decrease in volume and 4.66% in value. The average unit price increased by 6.6% to $13.50 per set, slightly above the global average. The U.S. accounted for 43.14% of the total export volume and 41.97% of the value.
In **Hong Kong**, exports declined by 3.89% in volume, reaching 8.01 million sets. However, the value increased by 4.63% to $87.21 million, with an average unit price of $10.89—up 8.86% year-on-year. Hong Kong held 12.17% of the export volume and 9.5% of the value.
The **UK** saw a significant drop, with exports falling 17.82% in volume to 4.23 million sets and 24.47% in value to $63.34 million. The average unit price fell by 8.1% to $13.29 per set, making it the only major market where prices declined. The UK accounted for 6.44% of export volume and 6.13% of value.
**Provincial Exports Decline Across the Board**
Exports from major provinces also declined. **Jiangsu Province** had the smallest drop at 2.52%, while **Zhejiang Province** saw the steepest decline at 15.24%. Among the top four silk garment exporting provinces—Zhejiang, Guangdong, Jiangsu, and Shanghai—their combined exports accounted for 93.55% of the national total.
Zhejiang led the pack, exporting 28.77 million sets, or 43.72% of the total. This underscores the province’s critical role in China’s silk garment industry.
Overall, despite declining export volumes, the sector maintained a strong pricing position, reflecting efforts to improve quality and competitiveness in international markets.
