Japan's nonwovens production decreased by 3.2% in October
According to a recent report from Japan's Sankei newspaper, nonwoven production in the country declined by 3.2% year-on-year in October, reaching 26,569 tons—the first drop in 11 months. However, for the first ten months of the year, total nonwoven output still rose by 25.2%, totaling 261,486 tons.
This mixed performance highlights a shift in the industry. While thermal-bonded and needle-bonded nonwovens continued their upward trend for the 10th consecutive month, wet-laid nonwoven production saw its first decline in 12 months. Similarly, spunbond and meltblown nonwoven output also fell for the first time in 10 months, signaling possible challenges in certain segments of the market.
Breaking down the figures for October: chemical-bonded nonwovens dropped by 15% to 1,597 tons; thermal-bonded nonwovens increased by 4.7% to 3,210 tons; needle-bonded nonwovens rose slightly by 0.2% to 6,534 tons; high-water spray nonwovens fell by 10.8% to 2,827 tons; spunbond and meltblown nonwovens decreased by 1% to 7,458 tons; other types of nonwovens dropped by 2.6% to 2,124 tons; and wet-laid nonwovens fell by 9.3% to 2,819 tons.
These numbers suggest that while the overall market remains strong, specific sectors are experiencing headwinds, possibly due to shifting demand or supply chain disruptions. The contrast between rising and falling categories shows the complexity of Japan’s nonwoven industry as it navigates both growth and contraction in different areas.
