I'm always thrilled to share a new sewing pattern with you because it gives me the perfect opportunity to showcase my latest fabric obsessions and creative discoveries over the past several months! This time around, I’m excited to dive into the details of our brand-new Prado Trench Coat. If you're curious about my initial thoughts and inspirations behind this pattern, you can check out my introductory post right here.
As I mentioned before, trench coats are timeless yet incredibly trendy right now. They’ve long been considered a staple in many wardrobes, but today they’re more popular than ever. You’ll notice them popping up everywhere—on the streets, in magazines, and even on social media. Here are a few snapshots I came across recently:

There's something undeniably chic about a trench coat—it's versatile and effortlessly stylish. Whether you pair it with a casual hoodie or dress it up with an elegant evening gown, a trench coat instantly elevates your outfit. Take a look at these examples:

One of the most exciting aspects of sewing your own trench coat is the endless possibilities for customization. For instance, why not try color-blocking? While store-bought versions of this technique can be expensive, you might already have leftover fabric in your stash that could work perfectly. Even small touches, like adding a pop of color to the under-side of the tabs or incorporating a floral print, can give your trench coat a unique, personalized flair.

And don’t forget about the cropped version, View B! This design is surprisingly versatile as a layering piece. With the option to include or exclude the belt and cape, you can tailor it to suit your personal style. Just look at that cropped leather trench coat below—it’s absolutely stunning!

While most trench coats tend toward neutral tones to maximize versatility, don’t feel limited to earthy shades. Why not experiment with bold colors or eye-catching prints? Although I usually stick to neutrals in my everyday wardrobe, I’m absolutely thrilled with my vibrant red-orange version. Once the weather warms up a bit, I can’t wait to wear it regularly!

During the design phase of this project, I also experimented with some fun variations. Imagine sewing a sleeveless trench coat in lightweight linen for a chic summer layer. Or styling it with denim and wrapping a sweater around your neck like a scarf—these are just a few ideas that caught my attention.

Of course, trench coats aren’t limited to traditional fabrics like twill or gabardine. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box! Denim, canvas, and even home decor fabrics like sateen or brocade can create equally stunning results. If you’re aiming for a winter coat, this pattern works beautifully with heavier materials too. In fact, it was the inspiration for my recent green wool coat, which I shared in a separate post just yesterday.

Speaking of wools, I’m itching to start another cropped trench coat (View B) using some luxurious blue Thom Browne tweed that’s been patiently waiting in my stash. Meanwhile, my daughter S will likely claim the cropped version from the pattern cover as soon as she heads back to school in a couple of weeks. I won’t mind—I’m always delighted when she loves something I’ve made enough to make it hers!

In the meantime, I can’t wait to see what you create with this pattern! Have any questions? Let me know what you’re thinking—I truly want you to succeed with this project. It’s such a playful yet sophisticated style to work with, and wearing it is equally enjoyable.
