Introducing a new sewing pattern is always exciting because it gives me the opportunity to share my latest sewing obsessions with all of you! Over the past six months, I’ve been completely absorbed in creating this Prado Trench Coat pattern, and now it’s finally ready for you to try out. If you’re interested, you can read my initial thoughts on this pattern [here](insert link).

Trench coats have been having a moment lately—both as a timeless classic and a current trend. They’re essential pieces in many wardrobes because they never go out of style. Right now, you’ll notice them popping up everywhere, whether it’s on the streets or on social media. Here are a few examples I found:

What’s not to love about a trench coat? Their versatility is unmatched. Whether you’re pairing it with a hoodie or wearing it over an elegant evening gown, a trench coat instantly adds a touch of sophistication to your outfit. Take a look at these photos—each one shows how effortlessly a trench coat can elevate your look.

One of the best parts about sewing your own trench coat is the endless possibilities for customization. For instance, this color-blocked design looks absolutely stunning, and while it may be expensive to buy pre-made, you could create something similar using leftover fabric from your stash. Or, if you're feeling creative, why not experiment with contrasting colors or prints for the tabs or lining? Adding small personalized touches like this can make your trench coat truly unique.

The cropped version of the trench coat, View B, is also proving to be surprisingly versatile. You have the option to sew it with or without the belt and cape, allowing you to tailor the style to suit your preferences. Look at this cropped leather trench coat—I’m absolutely in love with it!

Most trench coats tend to come in neutral tones to ensure they pair well with everything in your wardrobe. However, if you’re looking to add a pop of color or personality to your collection, consider sewing yours in a bold hue or a striking print. I recently made a vibrant red/orange version, and even though I typically stick to neutrals in my everyday wardrobe, I’m thrilled with how it turned out. I can’t wait for the weather to improve so I can wear it regularly!

During the development phase of this pattern, I experimented with several variations, including a sleeveless version made from lightweight linen for a chic summer layer. I also enjoyed seeing how it looked styled with denim and even used as a makeshift scarf.

Speaking of variations, don’t forget that you can get creative with the fabric choices. While traditional twill or gabardine are staples, I encourage you to think beyond the usual materials. Denim, canvas, or even home decor fabrics like sateen or brocade can work beautifully. This style is also ideal for a winter coat—just imagine how cozy it would feel in wool! The photos below were part of my inspiration for making my green wool coat, which I discussed in detail in a recent post.

I’m currently eyeing some luxurious blue Thom Browne wool tweed in my fabric stash for another cropped trench coat (View B). Meanwhile, my daughter S will likely claim the cropped version featured on the pattern cover once she heads back to school in a few weeks. It’s always rewarding when she appreciates something I’ve made enough to want to keep it!
