Autumn Winter 2011 Paris Fashion Week Emanuel Ungaro 2011 Winter Womenswear Show
Emanuel Ungaro defied the golden rule of the fashion world: never mix plaids and silvers. His collections were a bold, free-spirited fusion of polka dots, zebra stripes, Scottish tartans, and vibrant floral prints. He embraced the chaos of the skirt and the complexity of style, creating pieces that were as fluid and flirtatious as his undulating, jade-like tones.
At the Fall Winter 2011 Paris Fashion Week, Ungaro’s womenswear show was a dazzling display of creativity and color. The collection was a vivid expression of his artistic vision, filled with intricate details and unexpected combinations.
Ungaro first gained recognition in the summer of 1965, when Paris dubbed him "a young terrorist" for his daring designs. His Spring/Summer 1996 haute couture show featured a sensual belt dress with a heart-shaped neckline and a curvaceous silhouette. The evening gowns were adorned with shimmering vulture feathers, adding an element of theatricality. A few months later, his Fall/Winter 1995 collection was a baroque symphony—layered with transparent organza, lace, embossed brocade, and tulle, transporting viewers back to a bygone era.
“Haute couture is a play,†Ungaro once said. “It's a ceremony, a complicated, distinguished, luxurious, and exquisite event.†Born into an Italian immigrant family, he moved to Paris at the age of 22 in 1955. He worked under Courreges for two seasons before moving to Balenciaga, where he spent six years. In 1965, he launched his own fashion house with four tailors, starting with just 20 coats.
During the era of Courreges and Cardin, Ungaro’s miniskirts and silver accessories stood out with sharp edges and bold textures. Today, his signature style has evolved, seen in two-tone jackets and structured silhouettes. However, he also began softening this edge by pairing them with flowing silk dresses.
In 1996, Ungaro was acquired by Salvatore Ferragamo, and among the brand’s many lines was the popular “Parallele†collection. Despite changes over the years, his legacy remains one of fearless creativity and artistic expression in the world of fashion.
