Tianyi Pavilion, Asia's oldest bookstore, will be digitized
The Tianyi Pavilion, Asia's oldest private library with a history spanning over 400 years, is set to embark on a digital transformation. This exciting development was confirmed by the author during a press conference hosted by the Ningbo Municipal Government Information Office.
On the afternoon of December 8th, a grand celebration for the new bookstore and the official launch of the ancient book digitization project will take place at the Tianyi Pavilion Museum in Ningbo. This event marks the beginning of a new "digital era" for the historic institution.
Zou Daming, deputy director of the Ningbo Bureau of Culture and Broadcasting, highlighted that the newly implemented constant temperature and humidity control system has finally resolved a long-standing challenge in preserving the precious collections of the pavilion. To date, 30,000 rare books have been digitized, with 2,000 of them fully scanned. According to Zou, the digitization of ancient texts has not only bridged the gap between the Tianyi Pavilion and scholars around the world but also allows the public to access an overview of its ancient collections through online video. He emphasized that this initiative fundamentally enhances the protection and management of historical documents.
Located in the heart of Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, the Tianyi Pavilion is China’s first private library and one of the oldest libraries in Asia. It is also among the earliest three family libraries in the world. Spanning 26,000 square meters, the pavilion was originally constructed during the mid-Ming Dynasty by Fan Qin, a retired official who had served as a minister in the Ministry of Defense. Its rich cultural heritage and historical significance make it a vital center for the preservation and dissemination of Chinese classical knowledge.
