"Stealing to sell" Chanel 3.3 businesses were investigated
In a recent crackdown on intellectual property violations, the Chaoyang Branch of the Municipal Bureau of Industry and Commerce conducted an inspection at the 3.3 Building in Sanlitun, seizing 16 businesses suspected of selling counterfeit luxury goods, including items from Chanel, Gucci, Prada, and Dior. The operation took place on the afternoon of the previous day, with officials confiscating a range of women's handbags, shoes, and accessories that appeared to be imitations of well-known brands.
Located on the first floor of the 3.3 Building, the shop was found to be displaying various branded products, such as Chanel women’s shoes priced at 4,580 yuan and Gucci wallets priced at 4,680 yuan. According to the shop clerk, the owner is a foreigner who claims these items are imported second-hand from abroad. However, no documentation or proof of authenticity was provided, nor was there any authorization for the sale of these goods.
The head of the Chaoyang Branch emphasized that international brand products like Chanel and Prada are not permitted to be sold in clothing markets or wholesale areas, according to current regulations. The department will now contact the trademark holders for verification and take appropriate action based on the findings.
This morning, the reporter learned that the 16 seized items have been temporarily held while the authorities wait for the trademark owners to confirm their authenticity. If the items are confirmed as fake, the store could face severe penalties under Article 52 of the PRC Trademark Law, including fines up to three times the illegal business amount, or up to 100,000 yuan if the revenue cannot be determined.
If the goods are proven genuine, the industrial and commercial department will return the items to the store after issuing a warning and requiring the shop to ensure all products are sourced legally, with proper purchase receipts for each item.
The 3.3 Building, located in the famous Sanlitun Bar Street, has become a popular shopping destination for celebrities and fashion-conscious consumers. Its trendy style has attracted many visitors, but it has also drawn attention from authorities due to repeated reports of counterfeiting activities.
As part of a broader campaign launched by the Chaoyang Branch since November 2010, efforts have been made to combat intellectual property infringement and the sale of counterfeit goods. Targeted markets include Xiushui and Yaxiu, among others. As of yesterday, over 1,200 law enforcement officers have been deployed, inspecting more than 700 markets, destroying 8 counterfeit production sites, and initiating over 50 cases of trademark infringement, with one case being transferred to criminal authorities.
