Today, we’re thrilled to introduce Courtney, whose delightful blog can be found at Sweeter Than Cupcakes. I’m certain you’ll recall her unique “flipped†Croquet Dress and the vibrant color-blocked Hide-and-Seek Dress she shared with us earlier. Courtney is visiting us today to share her favorite Oliver + S pattern. Thank you so much for joining us, Courtney!
My all-time favorite Oliver + S pattern has to be the Class Picnic Blouse. It’s the perfect blend of style and simplicity. This pattern offers the relaxed charm of a traditional peasant blouse but with a more modern and polished finish. The flat bodice combined with elasticated sleeves makes it incredibly easy to put on and take off without the hassle of fiddly closures.

Sewing with Oliver + S patterns always feels like a learning experience. When I first tried the Class Picnic Blouse, it was my introduction to the concept of understitching—something I hadn’t encountered before. Since then, I’ve adopted this technique in many other projects, even when it wasn’t explicitly called for, as I love how it enhances the overall look.
One of the things I adore most about the Class Picnic Blouse is its versatility. For instance, my first version was crafted from cozy corduroy. Adding some flat or corded piping along the bodice seams gave it a touch of elegance and became my go-to embellishment.

Not long after, I created another version for Christmas, extending both the sleeves and the main body to transform it into a dress using some vintage plaid shirting. The result? A timeless piece that felt both festive and classic.
For the next Christmas, I experimented with richer royal hues, designing a skirt and top set. Once again, the subtle pop of piping at the bodice connected the two pieces beautifully.
But my absolute favorite creation from this pattern has to be the sweatshirt I transformed from an old one paired with an eyelet skirt. Talk about turning something ordinary into something extraordinary! You can check out the full tutorial for this modification [here](link).
Recently, inspired by the versatility of the Class Picnic Blouse, I revisited the pattern to make something completely new—a flannel nightgown. I extended the sleeves and cinched them with elastic, adding a personal touch by hand-embroidering “sweet dreams†onto the cuffs for a special little girl.

The possibilities with this pattern are endless, yet the design remains effortlessly chic. I can already picture myself sewing several more Class Picnic Blouses in the future. Though I must confess—I haven’t attempted the Class Picnic Shorts yet!
