my favorite oliver + s pattern: courtney from sweeter than cupcakes

Today we’re thrilled to welcome Courtney, whose blog, *Sweeter Than Cupcakes*, is always a treat to read. If you’ve been around for a while, you might recall her cleverly designed *Flipped* Croquet Dress and her vibrant *Hide-and-Seek* Color Block Dress. Courtney is here today to share her favorite Oliver + S pattern, and we’re so grateful she could join us! “My favorite Oliver + S pattern is undoubtedly the Class Picnic Blouse—it’s all about its timeless style and simplicity,” Courtney says. “It combines the relaxed charm of a peasant blouse with a more polished look. The elasticated sleeves paired with the flat bodice eliminate the need for fussy closures, making it a breeze to sew.” ![Oliver + S Class Picnic Blouse](#) Sewing with Oliver + S patterns has been a delightful journey for Courtney, especially since they introduce new techniques with every project. For instance, when she first tackled the Class Picnic Blouse, she discovered the art of understitching—something she now incorporates into many of her projects, even when it isn’t explicitly required. “I love how versatile this pattern is when it comes to fabric selection,” Courtney adds. “For my first version, I chose corduroy, which gave it a cozy, autumnal vibe. Adding flat or corded piping along the bodice seam added a touch of flair without overwhelming the design.” ![Corduroy Blouse](#) Encouraged by her success with the blouse, Courtney revisited the pattern during the holiday season. This time, she transformed it into a dress using some vintage plaid shirting. By extending the sleeves and the main body, she created a charming ensemble perfect for Christmas celebrations. The following year, she revisited the pattern again, opting for richer, royal hues. Once more, the addition of piping tied the skirt and top together beautifully. But perhaps Courtney’s proudest creation came when she turned an old sweatshirt and an eyelet skirt into a stunning one-of-a-kind piece. The full tutorial for this transformation can be found [here](#). Recently, inspired by the pattern’s adaptability, Courtney decided to revisit it once more. This time, she chose soft flannel fabric and crafted a cozy nightgown for a special little girl. She extended the sleeves, added elastic to cinch them, and finished it off with hand-embroidered “Sweet Dreams” on the cuffs. ![Flannel Nightgown](#) As Courtney reflects on her creations, she notes that while the fabric choices are endless, the classic silhouette remains a constant favorite. “There will definitely be more Class Picnic Blouses in my sewing repertoire!” she laughs. However, she admits to having yet to try her hand at the Class Picnic Shorts—a challenge she plans to tackle soon.
