"Grandpa" wearing Xuzhou paper-cut clothing came to power

In the upcoming production of "Dream Theater," Bi Fujian will don a unique paper-cut costume designed by Xuzhou-based folk artist Zhang Lijun. This creative collaboration presents an opportunity for Zhang Lijun to showcase her innovative paper-cut clothing to both the nation and the global stage. Speaking with reporters, Zhang expressed immense pride in creating what she considers her finest work. The costume, crafted over more than 100 hours, features intricate depictions of traditional Chinese magpies perched on plum blossoms, symbolizing joy and prosperity. Bi Fujian was thrilled to receive this distinctive attire, expressing astonishment at how seamlessly paper-cut art had been integrated into fashion: “This is incredible—I never imagined paper-cut designs could look so stunning on clothing!” For Zhang Lijun, this journey began unexpectedly in 2001 when she invited a friend to carve a pair of roosters onto a leather vest. The result was so impressive that it sparked inspiration. She realized that paper-cutting could transcend its conventional medium and be applied directly to fabric. After years of experimentation, Zhang successfully adapted paper-cut art to various textiles, including silk, cotton, and linen. Through techniques like printing, dyeing, tie-dyeing, and embroidery, she refined her craft and eventually secured a national patent for her method. Today, Zhang Lijun is preparing to register a trademark for her paper-cut clothing line. Her vision extends beyond personal achievement; she aims to collaborate with garment manufacturers to bring stylish yet functional paper-cut outfits to the market. With each piece embodying cultural heritage and artistic innovation, Zhang hopes to leave a lasting impact on fashion while preserving the timeless beauty of paper-cut traditions. (By Gan Xiaomei) As someone who has witnessed her evolution firsthand, I am continually amazed by Zhang’s dedication and creativity. It’s inspiring to see how she transformed an ancient art form into something contemporary and relevant. Her work not only breathes new life into traditional crafts but also opens doors for future generations to explore similar intersections between culture and design. I eagerly anticipate seeing where this path takes her next!
