The domestic market is growing rapidly and high-grade apparel fabrics are popular

In recent months, the domestic textile market has experienced a remarkable surge in growth. Many textile manufacturers and fabric merchants in the industry hub have intensified their efforts to supply fabrics for local garment companies. Particularly, those with small orders and intricate craftsmanship have become highly profitable—often yielding profits several times or even tenfold compared to standard products. As a result, this niche has emerged as a key focus for many fabric sellers. At the start of the new year, Xia Rong, the general manager of Shaoxing Golden Beauty Textile Co., Ltd., found himself busier than ever. Customers kept coming in daily to review samples, and contracts were signed almost every few days. However, this year’s orders were different from before—many were "small lists," with quantities ranging from just a few meters up to tens of thousands. These smaller orders, though seemingly modest, often involved high-end fabrics with complex production processes. Xia Rong explained, “Don’t be fooled by the small sizes. These are usually premium fabrics with detailed craftsmanship. The profit margins are much higher—sometimes even five or ten times that of regular goods. More and more textile companies are now focusing on these types of orders.” Industry experts note that rising raw material costs and fluctuations in the US dollar exchange rate have increased the risks associated with foreign trade. Traditional products are now being squeezed to the point where profit margins are barely visible. In contrast, the domestic market has seen a rapid rise in demand for apparel fabrics. Though these orders are smaller in quantity, they come with a wide variety of styles and complex production requirements. Despite this, the profit margins can reach 50% or even 80%, making them highly attractive. Zhejiang Yizheng Jin Textile Co., Ltd., a major producer of jacquard fabrics, has shifted its focus from conventional products to high-end, refined, and smaller-scale orders. According to the company's representative, their target clients are mid-to-high-end domestic and international clothing brands. To better serve these clients, the company established a dedicated product development center and brand division, assigning specific personnel to work directly with fashion brands, gather feedback, and develop new products based on market trends. Many of the new fabrics developed by the company have been well-received by both domestic and international clothing brands, leading to a steady increase in orders. A representative from “Easy Gold” noted that while traditional large orders often involve tens of thousands of meters, the profit per meter is minimal—sometimes just a few cents. Additionally, companies face risks like currency fluctuations. However, small domestic orders, though limited in size, tend to be higher priced and offer greater flexibility. Once a new fabric is successfully developed and accepted by one brand, it can be quickly recommended to others, resulting in significant cumulative volume. “Lee Star Textile,” a textile trading company based in Keqiao, has also pivoted its focus toward the domestic market. The company’s main clients are now garment manufacturers. Over the past year, they haven’t received any major overseas orders, but they’ve done substantial business with fashion companies in Shanghai and Ningbo. The overall profitability has been quite good, and the company is now planning to expand further into this area. According to an industry insider, although the process for handling small orders is similar to that of large ones, the quality and technical standards are higher. Large companies often avoid such orders, leaving the space to small and medium-sized enterprises. There are plenty of opportunities here. Once a new fabric is selected by a fashion brand, it has a high chance of being adopted by others. Some brands even give special requests and may assign slightly larger orders if they’re satisfied with the quality. If a supplier can consistently meet the needs of multiple fixed clients, it can lead to significant long-term business.
